Sep 12, 2014 Issues: Additional Issues

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz (PA-13) released the following statement today after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a $2.5 million TIGER VI grant to study additional safety and transit solutions for Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia. Schwartz has been an active advocate of increased funding for the TIGER Grant Program and for additional safety measures along Roosevelt Boulevard.  Schwartz has secured significant funding for safety projects along the Boulevard since 2005.

“Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $2.5 million grant to study ways to make Roosevelt Boulevard safer for pedestrians and drivers, as well as evaluating options to introduce additional mass transit options to the Boulevard. I am pleased that the City of Philadelphia was awarded this grant that will allow continued study and attention to the safety issues along this important thoroughfare.”

“Since 2005, I have been a strong advocate for increased safety measures along Roosevelt Boulevard. Working together with partners at the local, state and federal level, we have worked to install new pedestrian crosswalks, countdown timers, implemented new and innovative strategies to reach out to community groups, provide public education on safety and installed signage that has improved conditions along this road for pedestrians and drivers alike.”

“I congratulate the City of Philadelphia for receiving this highly competitive grant award, and look forward to continuing to work with partners in our community to make Roosevelt Boulevard safer and more effective for those who live and work in Northeast Philadelphia and in our region.”

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) program is a highly competitive grant program.  Since 2009, Congress has dedicated more than $4.1 billion for transformative infrastructure and transportation projects that have a significant impact on the Nation, a region or a metropolitan area. Additional information on the TIGER program can be found at www.dot.gov.
