Schwartz Announces Federal Grant to Support Living Beyond Breast Cancer

Washington, D.C. –U.S. Rep Allyson Y. Schwartz (PA-13) released the following statement today after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) received a $1.75 million grant over five years for its Young Women’s Initiative.  The Young Women’s Initiative program provides education and support to young women diagnosed with breast cancer. The Young Women’s Initiative received funding in 2011 through a previous CDC cooperative agreement.

“I am proud that Living Beyond Breast Cancer was selected for this competitive grant award by the CDC to build on its programs to meet the needs of young women,” said Schwartz, who is a long-time advocate for women’s health.  “I was proud to support this grant application to support critical LBBC programs, which has been serving people here since 1991 and now reaches people across the nation impacted by breast cancer.”

“Early in LBBC’s history, we identified the need for information specific to young women impacted by breast cancer.  With the first round of CDC funding, LBBC was able to build out our programs for young women, focusing on how a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at an early age impacts young women differently,” said Jean Sachs, chief executive officer of LBBC.   “Receiving this grant for a second time acknowledges LBBC’s expertise and effectiveness and we are both grateful for the funding and eager to expand the reach of our programs.”

Among the signature programs of the Young Women’s Initiative are informational videos and robust online content found on LBBC’s website lbbc.org; the Young Women’s Advocate Program, which assists young women with limited incomes to reach out to others in their communities; education and training programs designed to inform healthcare providers about the unique needs and perspectives of young women; and the expansion of LBBC’s Breast Cancer Helpline, which provides peer support to those impacted by breast cancer.
