Four years ago, when Northwestern Memorial HealthCare merged with Lake Forest Hospital, officials promised the building at 660 N. Westmoreland Ave. would be replaced, a commitment made real today during a groundbreaking ceremony for the new $378 million Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital building.

Officials say the first patient will enter its doors in 2017.

"This will be one of the top academic medical centers in the world," said Thomas J. McAfee, president of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. "This will be one of the top teaching communities in the U.S."

U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) visited a “Reach Out and Read” site at North Chicago Health Center, which helps promote literacy by working with doctors to prescribe books appropriate for children from six months to five years of age.

During the visit, Rep. Schneider learned more about the “Reach Out and Read” program and discussed importance of early education. Rep. Schneider is a cosponsor of Strong Start for America’s Children Act (HR 3461), which helps to develop, improve and expand early education programs.

Nearly 300 job seekers and more than 50 businesses participated in a Hiring Event hosted today by U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) in Zion.

The joint Hiring Event, which featured special guest State Senator Melinda Bush, was hosted at the Zion Park District offered jobseekers the chance to meet face-to-face with potential employers from across the area, as well as learn helpful strategies and make valuable connections.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk has been collecting mud from the Waukegan Harbor for 14 years, but he was able to stop Tuesday.

Kirk, R-Ill., was joined by Gov. Pat Quinn, Waukegan Mayor Wayne Motley, U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., and U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, D-10th, along with other local leaders, when the Environmental Protection Agency officially unclassified the harbor as a Great Lakes Area of Concern during a ceremony at the harbor’s Stiner Pavilion.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced the completion of all cleanup work required to remove Waukegan Harbor from the binational list of Great Lakes Areas of Concern. EPA Regional Administrator Susan Hedman was joined for the announcement at Waukegan Harbor by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, U.S. Representative Brad Schneider and Mayor Wayne Motley.
