Rep. Salmon Responds to President Obama’s Unilateral Immigration Actions

Nov 20, 2014
Press Release

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) issued the following response to President Obama’s unilateral immigration actions.

“Tonight, President Obama announced to America that he would disregard both our Constitution and the will of the American people.

“The American people resoundingly rejected the President's policies on the ballot just a few short weeks ago, and it is the American people who are sick and tired of a President who continues to unilaterally change our laws through executive orders and govern as if he is a monarch.

“This president has told the American people twenty-two times that he could not act alone to reform our immigration policies. He publicly declared that despite his wishes, he was 'not a king' and 'not an emperor,' and was 'bound by the Constitution' to work with Congress.

“But just like his promise that if you like your health insurance plan you can keep it, he has misled us once again.

“Resolving our immigration crisis should not be a partisan issue, but this President continues to make it one because of his defiant actions. If the President ever becomes willing to work with Congress, he might find a Congress that is still willing to work with him. Sadly, the reality is that his actions tonight have further deepened the rift between him and Congress and further derailed solving our immigration crisis.

“In the coming days, I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House to find any and every avenue provided to stop President Obama from continuing to ignore the will of the American people.  I, like the President, made an oath to uphold the Constitution.  I have every intention to continue to keep that promise."

Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. He is also a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
