College affordability must remain a top priority for Congress

As many high-school and college students across the state head back to class this week, the Maryland Congressional delegation is working hard to ensure their education comes without crushing debt.

The cost of college has soared more than 300% in the last 30 years and student loan debt in the  United States now exceeds $1.2 trillion – even more than credit card debt. Because that debt keeps young people from buying a home, saving for retirement, or even starting a family, it hurts our entire economy.

In Congress, House and Senate Democrats have introduced several pieces of legislation to address college affordability and reduce student loan debt, such as keeping interest rates low and letting students refinance their loans at today’s lower rates. Students should have the same opportunity to get a better deal that homeowners have by refinancing their mortgages.

I attended the University of Maryland College Park and would not be who I am today if not for my experiences there. Everyone deserves the opportunity to set themselves up for success through a quality, affordable education.
