MARLTON, NJ- Today, Congressman Jon Runyan (NJ-03) attended the Philadelphia VA Medical Center’s (PVAMC) annual Amputee Veterans First Swing Golf Clinic at the Indian Spring Country Club in Marlton, N.J.

“It was truly my honor to be a part of this great event,” said Runyan.  “Sports have always played an important role in my life, and I wanted to support our amputee veterans as they learn a new sport that can help in their recovery and build confidence in their abilities.  It is special moments like these that remind me why I ran for Congress.”

The golf clinic introduced amputee veterans to a new sport and rehabilitative activity that provides opportunities for mental and social growth as well as physical development.  The Department of Veterans Affairs has a history of sponsoring and encouraging veterans to participate in rehabilitative sporting events like the First Swing Golf Clinic and the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.

“VA understands the importance of providing an outlet that heals the mind as well as the body,” said Gary Woodring, Co-chair of the Golf Clinic, and Chief of Prosthetics at PVAMC.  “Just like the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, this event showcases the veterans’ experiences, and demonstrates the resiliency of their character.”

The clinic was free and open to any amputee veteran receiving care at a VA facility, and offered educational information as well as hands-on experience in the fundamentals of golf.  PGA professionals were on hand to teach basic techniques to first-time golfers and assist experienced golfers in perfecting their current skills. Golfers were also teamed with VA staff members to develop other rehabilitation and life skill needs.
