Holt Statement on U.S.-China Joint Announcement on Climate Change
11/12/14< Read more >(Washington, D.C.) – This morning, President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping announced from Beijing that the U.S. and China have agreed to carbon pollution reduction targets. The U.S. will accelerate reduction targets in 2020, hoping to achieve a 26-28 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2025, compared to 2005 levels. China has agreed for the first time ever to cap the growth of their carbon emissions by 2030. China will achieve this goal, in part, by investing in non-fossil energy sources, which they hope will comprise 20-percent of their power generation by 2030.

Sustainability is a Misused Term
11/10/14< Read more >Sustainability is an often misused term. Many companies and organizations advertise their commitment to sustainability even as they make only a token nod toward environmentalism. As a society we need to take a hard look at each of our practices – in energy, building construction, transportation, manufacturing, and household activities—and ask ourselves if those practices can be sustained for decades, for generations, for centuries. If the practices cannot be sustained, then we should not pretend they are sustainable.

10/24/14< Read more >Despite being the most densely populated state in the nation, New Jersey has undertaken significant efforts to preserve environmentally-sensitive land and open space. Restoring the Foundation; Equality Marches Forward; One Crisis to the Next
10/22/14< Read more >In the days before the Space Race, the skies seemed to be the limit for our achievements. When we broke through that limit, we inspired new ideas and unleashed a whole new set of possibilities. In 2007, a report was released which illustrated our nation’s risk of falling behind our competitors as science leaders, and for a brief moment, it captured the attention of scientists, economists, and lawmakers. I helped write the America COMPETES Act passed in its wake, which authorized a doubling of the budgets at many of our key science agencies.

A Labor Hero; White House Report on Antibiotics; My Mailbag
10/13/14< Read more >When Mary T. Norton was elected to Congress in 1925 from New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, she was only the fifth woman elected to the House, and the first female Democrat. She was the first of only two women to represent the 12th District. (Florence Dwyer was the second.) Altogether only five women have represented New Jersey in Congress. In her congressional career, "Battling Mary" served as chair of four committees, most notably the House Committee on Labor from 1937 to 1946, where she helped enact the groundbreaking Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 – which established the 40-hour work week, outlawed child labor, and established the first federal minimum wage – and fought for equal pay for women. That struggle for fair wages and equal pay for equal work continues.

The Weight of History; Common Sense Reform; The Most Powerful Instrument Devised By Man
10/3/14< Read more >During my tenure in Congress, the preservation of historically and environmentally significant land has been an important concern for me. My legislation to expand the Battlefield Acquisition Grant Program, which passed in the House, is awaiting action in the Senate. The bill would help organizations acquire funding to preserve Revolutionary War and War of 1812 sites in the United States. Hundreds of battlefields and associated sites need to be preserved, many in New Jersey.

79 Years Old; The Facts Are These; Never Again and Never Forget
8/15/14< Read more >On August 14, the Social Security Administration (SSA) turned 79. Since its inception in 1935, Social Security has provided a guaranteed benefit to millions of retired or disabled workers and their families, as well as survivors. To accomplish all of this, the SSA has maintained a number of Field Offices around the country. There, residents have traditionally been able to apply for benefits, as well as to receive benefit verification statements and printouts of their social security numbers. On Monday, I stopped by the SSA Field Office in Trenton to thank the staff for their diligent work to provide residents of Central NJ with excellent service. The Trenton Field Office is an example of government and government employees that work for the people.

These Children are Refugees; New Jersey's Commitment to Sustainable Energy; Livable Communities
8/11/14< Read more >As the nature of migration has changed in recent years, Congress has failed to update our immigration laws accordingly, leaving us unequipped to deal with the current humanitarian crisis on the Southern border. Make no mistake – this is indeed a humanitarian crisis. These unaccompanied minors – these children – are crossing our border by themselves, across thousands of miles, to escape conditions that we in this country can only imagine. We should be compassionate and treat these children as refugees, because these children are refugees.

"There is something fascinating about science"; Ways to Make Your Voice Heard; Working for You
3/28/14< Read more >In Life on the Mississippi Mark Twain wrote, "There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact." He was being facetious, of course, extrapolating that the Mississippi River, if it continued to shorten by cutting new channels through its bends, would eventually be a mile and three quarters long from southern Illinois to New Orleans, but he was more right than he intended. Science does offer marvelous extensions of understanding, far beyond a scientist's immediate observations. Last week, scientists working at the South Pole announced new measurements of tiny variations in the radio noise in the deep sky that greatly advance our understanding of the origins of the universe. How could these subtle variations measured by a telescope pointed to different points of the sky tell scientists about the origin of the universe?

But more subtle, and equally pernicious, obstacles to women's economic success remain. Two-thirds of all minimum-wage workers are women. Nearly half of full-time employees have no protections for paid family and medical leave.
