The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program will award more than $300 million this year to assist fire departments and other emergency service providers across the country. The application period for these grants runs from November 3rd at 8am ET to Friday, December 5th at 5pm ET.

“Emergency first responders have a responsibility to be ready for any threat to public health or safety at any time,” said Owens. “AFG grants have been an important source of funding for these selfless public servants, providing them with critical safety equipment and training that their local departments often cannot afford otherwise. I urge first responder organizations throughout Northern New York to consider applying for these grants to get the critical safety and rescue equipment, infrastructure and training needed to keep first responders and their communities safe.”

The AFG Program was created to support the purchase of emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training that local first responder organizations could not afford otherwise. AFG grants provided more than $13M in funding for NYS organizations in the last fiscal year including grants to organizations in Plattsburgh, Chazy, Ogdensburg and Massena.

Eligible organizations can submit up to three applications under the following categories: operations and safety, including professional training; wellness and fitness programs equipment; personal protective equipment; modifications to facilities; supplies that support firefighting and non-affiliated EMS operations and safety; vehicle acquisition, including pumpers, aerials, brush trucks, tankers/tenders, rescue vehicles, ambulances; regional grants, or projects spanning multiple organizations and more than one local jurisdiction.

More information about the AFG program can be found at: http://www.fema.gov/firegrants/afggrants/index.shtm. An additional “Get Ready Guide” may also be helpful for applicants and is available at: http://www.fema.gov/pdf/firegrants/Get_Ready_Guide.pdf.
