Internships

Senator Heitkamp’s office offers college students the opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand. Internships are available year round and on a rolling basis in each of the senator’s offices: Bismarck, Fargo, Dickinson, Grand Forks, Minot and Washington, D.C.

Interns will gain experience with the legislative process and the operations of the senator’s office by working with staff on issues and interacting with constituents.  Each intern will be given a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: conducting legislative research, assisting with correspondence, attending hearings and briefings and performing general administrative duties.

Interns in state offices support office staff by working to address constituent concerns, performing legislative research and assist with special projects and events.

Please indicate which office you would like to apply to and if you are applying for a fall, winter/spring, or summer internship in the subject line of your email.

Eligibility:

Internships are for college sophomores, juniors and seniors, and preference will be given to candidates who are from North Dakota or attend an in state college or university.

Time Commitment:

We prefer students who can commit 30-35 hrs/week, but can be flexible depending on the right candidate.

Dates and Deadlines:

We accept applications on a rolling basis.

Below are the dates of the internships. Exact start and end dates will be determined upon hiring:

  • Fall Internship Duration: August - November
  • Winter/Spring Internship Duration: January - April
  • Summer Internship Duration: May - August 

Compensation:

Internships in Senator Heitkamp’s office are paid and students are also eligible to receive college credit.
