MONTCLAIR, CA – Dozens of students from Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties interested in applying for admission to one of the United States Service Academies attended an informational session hosted by Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) in the City of Montclair Wednesday night.

Rep. Negrete McLeod invited representatives from the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marines Academy who outlined the process for applying for a Congressional Nomination for an Academy appointment.   All students seeking admission to these institutions require a nomination from a Member of Congress or from the Vice President of the United States.

“This Service Academy Night was an opportunity for students and their families to learn about the benefits of attending one of our nation’s military academies and how students can earn a Bachelor’s Degree, get free room and board, get free health insurance, all while serving our nation and getting a top-notch education,” said Rep. Negrete McLeod.  “I want to thank all the students, families and military personnel who attended the event and helped make it a success.”

Earlier in the year, Rep. Negrete McLeod announced Chino High School student Eleyna Hana Richardson’s recent appointment to the highly selective and prestigious United States Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 2018.  Richardson attended one of Rep. Negrete McLeod’s Service Academy Night last year.

“I was shocked when I received my letter of the appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy,” said Richardson.  “While attending I hope to major in Nuclear Engineering.  I would like to thank my parents, teachers, and friends for their support throughout my life who helped me grow into the person I am now.  I also would like to thank Congresswoman Negrete McLeod for nominating me to the Academy.”

Each member of Congress nominates exemplary students from their district to attend a service academy.  Congresswoman Negrete McLeod’s nomination of Richardson is only one of an estimated 600 congressional nominations from the entire nation that will be appointed this year to the Naval Academy.
