Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents.  Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved in the nationwide competition.  Each spring, this high school arts competition, called the Artistic Discovery Contest, is sponsored by the Member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

All artwork will be submitted through the art teachers at local high schools.  Students living in the 8th District should submit their artwork through my District Office in Alexandria, Virginia.  Students living in neighboring districts should submit their artwork through the offices of the Member of Congress representing their district.  The first place winner from each district will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol.  There is an opening reception for all of the winners from across the country in June.

All entries must be original in concept, design and execution and may include the following:

  • Paintings- including oil, acrylics and watercolor
  • Drawings- including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints- including lithographs, silkscreen and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer Generated Art
  • Photography
