About Indiana's 6th District

Shelbyville TreeIndiana’s 6th Congressional District is one of the largest and most scenic in the state.  It stretches from Delaware County at the top, to Jefferson and Switzerland Counties along the beautiful Ohio River.  The 6th District is comprised of 19 counties in east-central and southeastern Indiana and also includes Ohio, Jennings, Ripley, Dearborn, Bartholomew, Decatur, Franklin, Union, Fayette, Rush, Shelby, Hancock, Henry, Wayne, Randolph and part of Scott.

The 6th District is home to world renowned architecture, historic landmarks, beautiful parks and famous Americans. Wayne County is home to the Wright brothers and Gennett Records, where some of the earliest Jazz recordings were produced in the late 1910s and early 1920s.  Some even call Richmond “the cradle of recorded jazz” for that very reason.

Muncie is the home of Ball State University Cardinals and where David Letterman attended school.  It’s also where Jim Davis, the creator of the Garfield cartoon, studied art and business.   Hancock County is the home of famed-Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley and was named for John Hancock, the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.  Columbus is known for its beautiful architecture and for being the home of the oldest theater in the state, Crump Theater.  Built in 1889 by John Crump, the theater still hosts musical performances to this day.

Milan High School Basketball TeamThe 1980's classic movie Hoosiers was shot in the 6th district as the fictional Hickory Huskers played at the real life gym in Knightstown.  The 1954 State Champ Milan Indians that inspired the movie are from the 6th district as well.

The Decatur County Courthouse is known for a tree growing from the top of the Courthouse Tower, giving Greensburg the nickname "Tree City".

Famous Hoosiers from the 6th District include Wilbur Wright, actress Joyce Dewitt, U.S. Olympians Jayce Phelps & Nick Goepper, one-time world's tallest woman Sandy Allen, one-time world's oldest woman Edna Parker, Vice President Thomas Hendricks, three time Indianapolis 500 winner Wilbur Shaw, racecar driver Tony Stewart, basketball player Bill Garrett,  actress Jamie Hyneman and cinema and television pioneer Francis Jenkins.

Cliffty FallsWe’ve had two Indiana Governors hale from our part of the state including Oliver Morton and the current Governor Mike Pence.

If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors, the 6th District is home to three beautiful State Parks including Cliffty Falls in Madison, Summit Lake in New Castle and Whitewater Memorial State park in Liberty.

So, no matter where you live in the 6th District you are never far from culture, history, arts and outdoors making our home a wonderful place to live, work and play.
