Economy and Jobs

If you work hard and play by the rules in America, you should have an opportunity to succeed. That is the promise of the American dream. Yet, in today’s economy, too many Americans feel they work hard with little opportunity to get ahead. Paychecks are shrinking, and many of our friends and neighbors are struggling to find good paying jobs. Congress can play a role in creating a healthy economy that encourages job growth. That means lowering taxes that stop employers from creating new jobs, reducing the number of inefficient and ineffective job-killing regulations and ensuring job-seekers have the skills they need for 21st Century jobs. It also means balancing the federal budget and reducing the cost of borrowing, so that our children and grandchildren will have an opportunity to succeed as well.

For too long, individuals with disabilities and their families have been forced into an unfair choice—stay poor and rely on government assistance or work to be more self-sufficient and completely give up much-needed government benefits.

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives did something about that unfairness by passing the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act.  This act gives the disabled an important third option—the option to participate in the labor force without being forced off of the social safety net.

“More jobs created than expected.” That was the headline Friday as the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly jobs numbers.  No doubt, there was some much needed good news in this latest report.  The economy is slowly showing signs of recovery.  But, beneath the surface of the headlines, we still have a long way to go.

WASHINGTON —Last night, Congressman Luke Messer voted to allow Hoosier farmers to do their jobs without costly and unnecessary government interference.  The Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act of 2014 (H.R. 5078), which Congressman Messer voted for, stops the redefinition of “navigable waters” by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and preserves the existing federal-state partnership under the Clean Water Act (CWA).

The open enrollment period for insurance plans mandated by the Affordable Care Act is just months away.  For most Hoosiers, that means a bigger bite out of their monthly budgets next year.  Health insurance premiums in Indiana will go up an average of 13% in 2015 according to a study conducted by the Health Research Institute.   That means individual Hoosiers can expect to pay about $497 per month for insurance without government subsidies.  That’s not affordable, despite the law’s title.
