Congressman McGovern knows that we have an obligation to care and honor our veterans and their families. Jim authored legislation (“Hope at Home”) to provide tax incentives to employers that continue to pay the salaries of their National Guard and Reserve employees who are called to active duty. Jim supported the Post-9/11 GI-Bill to restore the promise of a full, four-year college education for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Jim also continues to be a strong supporter of Tri-Care and other vital services for our veterans.

In addition, Congressman McGovern secured funding for organizations and companies that work to improve the life of veterans through direct care, and technology, including state-of-the-art prosthetics for wounded soldiers.

HOUSE ADOPTS MCGOVERN AMENDMENT ON SERVICE DOGS FOR VETERANS

The U.S. House of Representatives today, as part of the FY 2015 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill, passed an amendment offered by U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-02) to establish a $3 million competitive grant pilot program to address the physical and mental health needs of service members and veterans with assistance from service dogs.

This amendment establishes a $3 million competitive grants pilot program for qualified nonprofit organizations whose mission is to address the physical and mental health needs of veterans and service members with assistance from trained service dogs. This is a very modest amount of money when we consider the need of our veterans and the number of organizations around the country dedicated to addressing this need.

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-02) today announced that he has introduced H.R. 4778, the bipartisan “Atomic Veterans Service Medal Act” in the House of Representatives. The bill would authorize the award of a military service medal to members of the Armed Forces who were exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of participation in the testing of nuclear weapons or under other circumstances.

U.S. Rep. James “Jim” McGovern wants to take what Franklin County’s got and give it to the rest of the country. “What I love about the new part of my district is that, out here, people demonstrate how to do things right,” McGovern told a crowd of constituents gathered at Green Fields Market Saturday. His district, largely in Worcester County, grew to include Greenfield and 13 central and eastern Franklin County towns during last year’s federal redistricting. His words referred to the county’s commitment to sustainable living, support of local agriculture and enthusiasm for renewable energies.

M. Speaker, budgets are moral documents. These annual documents are really statements of who we are as political parties and groups. They represent our values. They tell a story about what we believe in and how we would govern.

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-02) today introduced the bipartisan Wounded Warrior Service Dog Act in the House of Representatives.

The bill, HR 2847, would create a competitive grant program for nonprofits that train service dogs for use by veterans. It defines the term “assistance dog” to mean a dog specifically trained to perform physical tasks to mitigate the effects of a disability. This bill authorizes $5 million for each of five fiscal years.

BOSTON - Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown, along with Congressmen Jim McGovern, Richard Neal, and John Olver, today announced that three organizations across Massachusetts will receive $1,113,840 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide homeless veterans in Massachusetts the job training to help them succeed in civilian careers.
