Are You Interested in a Service Academy?

One of the privileges of being a Member of Congress is to nominate outstanding young women and men who live in the 18th Congressional District to the United States Service Academies. Ranked among the finest educational institutions in the world, the service academies prepare cadets and midshipmen for a lifetime of leadership and service in the Armed Services.

The Academies select only the most qualified high school students in the country. The selection process is highly competitive and each service academy looks for candidates of high scholarship with strong backgrounds in math and science, leadership potential, and physical aptitude. Medical fitness and the motivation for a military career following graduation are also important factors. The law requires that candidates for service academies be at least 17 years old and not have passed their 22nd birthday. Candidates must also be U.S. citizens, unmarried and not have any dependents.

Students should contact the service academy or academies they're interested in attending in the spring of their junior year to start a pre-candidate file. During the summer before their senior year, students should write to my Palo Alto office expressing their desire to be considered for nomination to a service academy.

The nomination process and the academy application process are different and separate. Interested students should be in contact with our Palo Alto office and the academy they want to attend.

Application packets are mailed out in the fall to all students who have contacted our office with their request. Please contact the Palo Alto District Office for the latest deadlines.

More information about the various Service Academies can be found below.
