10/7/2013 - I want to share with you an opinion piece that ran in the New York Times on October 6, 2013 titled "Welcome to Ted Cruz's Thunderdome." Embedded in this vivid and metaphorical portrayal of a post-apocalyptic America is an important message for us all. Party politics and ideology cannot be placed over duty and love for country. We must work together sensibly and with regard for others, or our future truly is at stake.

10/4/2013 - As a lover of history and all that is written about our nation and its forefathers, I thought you might enjoy how prescient George Washington was in his farewell address to the nation. As we are bearing witness to troubled times in our country, I think you will draw as much from this quotation as I have. The enclosed is an excerpt from Daniel Webster's speech, "The Character of Washington," on the occasion of the one hundredth birthday of George Washington:

"Among other admonitions, Washington has left us, in his last communication to his country, an exhortation against the excesses of party spirit. A fire not to be quenched, he yet conjures us not to fan and feed the flame. Undoubtedly, Gentlemen, it is the greatest danger of our system and of our time. Undoubtedly, if that system should be overthrown, it will be the work of excessive party sprit, acting on the government, which is dangerous; for government then becomes nothing but organized party, and, in the strange vicissitudes of human affairs, it may come at last, perhaps, to exhibit the singular paradox of government itself being in opposition to its own powers, at war with the very elements of its own existence.

"Such cases are hopeless. As men may be protected against murder, but cannot be guarded against suicide, so government may be shielded from the assaults of external foes, but nothing can save it when it chooses to lay violent hands on itself."
