Need Help Filing Your Taxes?

The federal tax filing season opens on January 30, 2013.  The deadline for your 2012 federal tax return is April 15, 2013.  The following free services are available to answer your questions or help you prepare your tax returns.  My staff is available to help you find answers to your tax questions; please contact 703-670-4989 for assistance.

 

FREE TAX PREPARATION FOR YOU BY VOLUNTEERS

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and dedicated volunteers provide several tax preparation resources that help low income individuals and seniors meet their tax filing requirements. 

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
The VITA Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE)
The TCE Program offers free tax help for all with priority assistance to people who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT

If your family earned less than $50,270 last year, you may qualify for nearly $6,000 in credit or cash back from the IRS through the Earned Income Tax Credit - or EITC.

You can qualify even if you don’t owe taxes, but you must file a tax return to receive a payment. Here are the basics:
