Cuts Through Red Tape to Expedite Federal Funding to Prevent Flooding in Orange

Newburgh, NY – Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) and Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced a federal investment to strengthen two additional bridges in Orange County. This $5.828 million investment through the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) will strengthen flood-prone bridges, repair existing damage due to past flooding, and protect families, businesses and communities from future flooding.

“Since day one, I’ve worked across the aisle with local, state and federal officials to make critical investments in our infrastructure to keep folks safe,” said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney. “My neighbors in Orange have been hit especially hard by storms Sandy, Irene, and Lee, and this federal investment in our bridges will ensure the safety of our families, businesses and communities during future storms.”

“As we continue to adjust to the new reality of severe weather, it is imperative that we reimagine our infrastructure to be more resilient to flooding, deterioration, and other hazards caused by major storms,” Governor Cuomo said. “These bridges serve as a transportation lifeline for New Yorkers and commercial shipping in communities across our State, and rebuilding them now means investing in their future for years to come. I applaud FEMA for approving this funding and helping us build a stronger New York State.”

In New York’s 18th Congressional District, two bridges will receive incrementally awarded funding, including:

•        $2,480,000 for Route 52 over Dwaar Kill in Town of Crawford

•        $3,348,000 for Route 97 over Shingle Kill in Town of Deerpark.

Maloney worked with Governor Cuomo to identify bridges across the Hudson Valley that needed upgrading and these priority projects have been pending FEMA approval. FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant program has approved funding to strengthen and upgrade 81 flood-prone bridges across New York.

So far this year, Maloney has announced $39.5 million in federal funding to strengthen or replace 8 additional bridges in the Hudson Valley including:

•        $2,480,000 for Route 211, over Harvey Roe Brook in the Town of Wallkill

•        $4,092,000 for Route 42, over Shingle Kill Creek in Port Jervis

•        $7,440,000 for Route 82, over Sprout Creek in Town of Wappinger

•        $3,373,000 for Route 52, over Quassaic Creek in Town of Newburgh

•        $3,125,000 for Route 55, over Jackson Creek in Town of LaGrange
