Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro announced $23,314,000 federal investment to strengthen six bridges in Orange and Dutchess Counties. This investment through the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) will strength flood-prone bridges, repair existing damage due to past flooding, and protect families, businesses and communities from future flooding.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) urged the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to take local concerns into consideration and immediately release comprehensive rules for improving crude oil transport safety. During the public comment period, Rep. Maloney sent a letter to Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Administrator Cynthia Quarterman urging DOT to move quickly on finalizing the proposed regulations mandating that the currently inadequate DOT-111 tank cards be discontinued or retrofit to meet new, heightened safety standards.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) announced that his bipartisan bill to help commuter rail lines like Metro-North fund and implement positive train control (PTC) systems passed the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as part of the Passenger Rail Reform and Investment Act (PRRIA). Originally authored following the tragic Metro-North derailment in December 2013, Rep. Maloney’s Commuter Rail Passenger Safety Act would help finance positive train control systems for commuter rail systems. Passed in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure by voice vote, this legislation would make all positive train control installations "priority projects" as part of the $35 billion Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing (RRIF) Program that currently provides loans and loan guarantees to railroads.

Three years after Hurricane Irene hit the Hudson Valley, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18), Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, State Senator John Bonacic and local officials announced $11.5 million in additional Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) funding for Orange County to recover and rebuild from Irene. Since January 2014, Rep. Maloney has persistently worked with HUD to make Orange County municipalities eligible for reallocated CDBG-DR funds to fulfill unmet needs from Hurricane Irene. Without the action of Rep. Maloney, the $11.5 million in unallocated CDBG-DR funding would return to HUD.

After releasing a detailed report on local transportation and infrastructure challenges in the Hudson Valley, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) outlined urgent transportation concerns to New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald shared by 1,800 constituents who answered an online survey issued by Rep. Maloney’s office. In addition, Rep. Maloney launched an online form to encourage folks to continue to report local transportation infrastructure problems including potholes, cracks and safety hazards.

After months of urging the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to release comprehensive rules for improving crude oil transport safety, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) applauded the DOT’s initial comprehensive proposal issued today to immediately phase out the use of older DOT-111 tank cars, issue new standards for tanker cars carrying highly hazardous materials, reduce operating speeds, and require notification for first responders. During the public comment period, Maloney will also urge the DOT to consider adding local first responders as part of the notification to state emergency responders for trains carrying more than a million gallons of Bakken crude. In addition, Maloney urged DOT to move quickly on developing and expanding comprehensive oil spill response planning requirements – now currently in the preliminary stages.
