Economy and Jobs
The most urgent and critical issue we face is growing our economy and jumpstarting job creation. Throughout our local community, and our nation as a whole, we have seen too many of our citizens struggling to find work. It is time for the federal government to get out of the way of small business owners, startup companies, and entrepreneurs all around country so that we can finally get our economy back on track.
As a business owner, I know what it takes to make payroll, balance a budget, and plan for the future. Families and business all across the country are forced to live within their means and it is time for our federal government to do the same.
The first step towards a strong economic recovery that will provide more good-paying jobs for Americans is to finally get our fiscal house in order. Our country currently has over $16 trillion in debt and we are borrowing and spending at an alarming rate.
Secondly, our small businesses are overregulated. An estimate from the Small Business Administration indicates that the cost of all government regulations to our economy comes out to $1.75 trillion per year. We need a comprehensive review of federal regulations and I will work to repeal those that are unnecessary and are blocking job growth.
In addition, the United States currently has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. In the age of globalization, our country ranks only seventh in competitiveness. I support cutting our corporate tax rate and keeping all other taxes as low as possible too.
There are many commonsense steps we can take right away to improve economic conditions in the United States and help put people back to work. Job creation must continue to be our number one priority and I will fight on behalf of American companies and entrepreneurs.

Despite the State Department’s finding that the project had minimal environmental impacts, the project has yet to receive final approval by the Obama administration.

Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale) today spoke in support of a measure that would accelerate the development of new surface water storage facilities, including Sites Reservoir in Northern California. H.R. 5412, sponsored by Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings (R-WA), streamlines the Bureau of Reclamation feasibility study process for surface water storage facilities by putting hard deadlines on study completion and authorizing construction of projects that are found feasible.
Reps. LaMalfa & Garamendi Announce Bill to Build Sites Reservoir, Increase California’s Water Supply
Maxwell, CA – Congressmen Doug LaMalfa (R-CA-01) and John Garamendi (D-CA-03) were joined today by local elected officials, water agencies, farmers and construction workers to announce a bill authorizing construction of Sites Reservoir in Northern California. Once built, Sites Reservoir will generate 1.9 million acre feet of new water storage for California, which still relies upon a water supply system designed decades ago for a much smaller population. The bill is the only bipartisan measure in Congress addressing California’s water crisis.
WASHINGTON — The California drought is stoking a congressional appetite for additional water storage, with new and larger dams back on competing menus.
The latest offering is expected Friday, as House members plan to introduce a package of bills to authorize a larger Shasta Dam, a new dam on the Upper San Joaquin River and an expanded San Luis Reservoir. Next week, a bill is expected that would call for construction of a reservoir northwest of Sacramento.
U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa wants the federal government to backtrack on a $3 billion commitment for high-speed rail in California.
Instead, LaMalfa said Tuesday that the money should be used instead for water infrastructure improvements that could help stave off drought threats in California in the state.

Washington, DC – Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA) today supported a measure authorizing construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry petroleum from Canada and the Northern United States as far South as Texas. The bill, HR 3, was passed by the Natural Resources Committee and will now be considered on the House floor. The bill’s passage comes on the heels of a State Department report finding that the project will have no major environmental impacts.
