Senator Manchin Hires Veterans

United States Senator Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia) is proud to join with his fellow co-chairs Senator Mark Kirk (R-Illinois), Representative Tim Walz (D-Minnesota) and Representative Jeff Denham (R-California) in the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus, a group that continues to work to decrease the unemployment rate of the nation’s 671,000 veterans (as of August 2014) who are currently looking for work. The caucus’s signature initiative is the “I Hire Veterans” program.

Unemployment is one of the biggest problems currently facing America’s veterans. In addition to our gratitude and support, our veterans need jobs. The “I Hire Veterans” initiative will serve as a sort of public awareness campaign.

Senator Manchin and the 113 additional Democrats and Republicans who have joined the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus – are asking their colleagues and private businesses small and large to make a personal and public commitment to hiring veterans by displaying the “I Hire Veterans” logo. Senator Manchin and the members of the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus all proudly display the logo in their offices to signify that they are proud to make the commitment to having veterans or veterans’ family members on their staffs. Senator Manchin’s own staff includes an Army veteran, an Air Force veteran, one active duty Army soldier, one currently-serving Army Reservist, and a West Virginia Army National Guardsman.

“It is unacceptable that unemployment is one of the biggest problems our veterans and service members currently face, which is why members of this caucus feel so strongly to show that we can walk the walk when it comes to hiring veterans,” Senator Manchin said. "Our veterans already have the qualifications and assets employers look for when hiring new employees. Like every generation of warriors, today’s young veterans make great hires. Their resumes include discipline, maturity, crisis management skills, leadership capabilities, and loyalty, and those resumes should be at the top of every employer’s stack.

“Since the launch of the Congressional Jobs Caucus and our ‘I Hire Veterans’ initiative, I’m proud to say that both the private and the public sectors have truly made a difference in reducing our veterans’ unemployment rate. As I’ve always said, if you want to help a vet, hire a vet – and then do business with the folks who hire vets. As co-founder of this caucus, I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in Congress and the organizations and companies across America who have committed helping reduce our veterans’ high unemployment rate.”

Employers who have hired veterans are encouraged to download the "I Hire Veterans" logo and display it in their workplace. The logo is available below.
