Hank announces Congressional Black Caucus Essay Contest and Issue Forum on cyberbullying

LITHONIA, GA – U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (GA04) urged qualified sophomores and juniors in the Fourth District to participate in the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Spouses (CBCF) Essay Contest and Issue Forum.

Students are presented with a topic that embodies some of our communities’ most pressing issues and are asked to write an essay to defend their research, analyses and opinion.

The topic this year is cyberbullying.

Submissions are judged by a special committee of CBC Spouses, CBCF staff and other volunteers. Essay winners and their families are invited to Washington, D.C. in September to present their essays and participate in an issue forum on the subject during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference (CBCF-ALC).

Congressman Johnson’s wife, Mereda Davis Johnson, serves as chair of the CBC Spouses.

Congressman Johnson is also excited to introduce a new technological element to the contest. Students will have the option of submitting a written essay or a video essay on the topic. Tech-savvy teens will have the opportunity to showcase their creative video production talents. All essays and videos must be submitted by June 10, 2014.

The issue forum will be facilitated by a moderator, who will lead the discussion after which the audience will be invited to ask questions and make comments. Among the audience members will be high school students, teachers and parents. The issue forum will take place on September 25, 2014 (time and venue to be determined).

All written and video essay submissions are due by Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Winners will be selected on or before Friday, August 1, 2014. The first place winner in each category will receive $1,000; the runners-up in each category will receive $750. Winners and runners-up will receive airfare and hotel accommodations to and from Washington, D.C. to attend a congratulatory luncheon and the issue forum that follows.
