Congressman Randy Hultgren

Representing the 14th District of ILLINOIS

Science and Technology

Science is at the heart of American innovation. From the pre-Revolutionary War era to today, American scientists have spearheaded many of the world's most impactful technological marvels, producing life-saving, job-creating advances that have deepened human understanding and improved our quality of life in countless ways.

As a member of the influential Science, Space and Technology Committee, I am leading the fight to hold the Obama Administration's feet to the fire when it comes to their misplaced priorities in the field of science, decisions that are costing American jobs and limiting our ability to remain a global leader in groundbreaking scientific research and discovery.  Under White House policy, money is being diverted away from fundamental research to pay for subsidies to the alternative energy industry. This must end.

As a co-founder and leading member of the Science and National Labs Caucus, I am active in advancing the role that science plays in unlocking the potential for economic growth and job creation here at home in Illinois and across the United States. The 14th Congressional District is home to Fermilab, one of our 19 outstanding national laboratories and a global leader in basic scientific research.  Fermilab houses hundreds of scientists from around the globe and is on the forefront of high energy physics, particle beam acceleration and technology transfer.

In Congress, I will continue to be a strong and effective advocate for our National Labs as well as STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for all students for they are our next generation of leaders in American innovation. Together with my colleagues Representatives Lipinski (D-IL), Davis (D-CA) and Hanna (R-NY), I am proud to co-chair the bipartisan STEM Education Caucus to champion these essential skills.

The Science, Space and Technology Committee has important oversight responsibilities of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Office of Science. Through hearings, audits, and reports we are waging the fight for America’s continued investment in basic research and its contributions to healthcare, energy, manufacturing, and other job-producing benefits.
