Southern Maryland
Southern Maryland was the first settled in 1634 with the arrival of passengers from England at St. Clements Island. A drive through Southern Maryland, which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, often provides visitors with a glimpse of rolling farmland, stretching for miles and bordering along the Bay. Calvert County also contains Calvert Cliffs, Maryland’s only nuclear reactor, and one of our nation’s largest liquid natural import facilities at Cove Point. St. Mary’s County is home to the Patuxent Naval Air Station, which provides important research and development technology that is important to support our military mission.

- Maryland’s settlement began with the arrival of English settlers at St. Clement’s Island in the Potomac River in what is now southwestern St. Mary’s County on March 25, 1634.
- Calvert County is home to Calvert Cliffs, Maryland’s only nuclear reactor. It also has one of the nation’s largest liquid natural gas import facilities at Cove Point.
- Charles County’s Indian Head Rail Trail is a new scenic 13 mile hiker/biker trail connecting the town of Indian Head to Route 301 at White Plains.
- Charles County is home to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team and the Regency Furniture Stadium located in Waldorf.
