WASHINGTON – In a moment of refreshing bipartisan collaboration, yesterday evening the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R. 5108 (327 – 22). The bill, sponsored by Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and co-sponsored by Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH), will benefit students, law schools and the innovation and tech community by partnering law student practitioners with inventors, small businesses and startups seeking free legal assistance on patent and trademark matters.

Congressmen Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) and Steve Chabot (R-OH) introduced H.R. 5108, legislation that would establish in law, the Law School Clinic Certification Program of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This bill would expand the current program by removing its “pilot” status, making it available to all accredited law schools in the country that meet the program’s eligibility requirements.

As part of its ongoing outreach to independent inventors, entrepreneurs and businesses, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), in cooperation with Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, are hosting a Saturday Seminar. USPTO Officials will conduct an all-day workshop alongside intellectual property (IP) experts in providing attendees valuable information about the different types of IP protection and the patent and trademark application process.

Speaking to an audience of about 150, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Blake Farenthold said the other chamber of Congress needs to move on legislation to combat frivolous patent lawsuits. The freshman New York Democrat and sophomore Texas Republican, both members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet, co-sponsored the Patent Litigation And Innovation Act (HR 2639), one of a number of proposals to combat patent trolls.
