Education
I am committed to ensuring that every student in Arizona has access to a high quality education from early childhood through college. Promoting effective reforms begins with what is best for students, and we all have a role to play. I will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to support policies that give our teachers the tools and resources they need and prepare our students to compete in a global economy.

Commitment to Education
As the father of an educator, Congressman Barber hears firsthand about obstacles to success in the classroom, and he is committed to addressing our educational system’s shortfalls. Federal policies can either hamper or promote success. The No Child Left Behind law has created obstacles for K-12 students’ success, and we can do better than that. Congressman Barber will continue to work to improve these federal policies, while protecting critical funding for programs that are effective, like Pell Grants for college students and Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA) Act programs.
STEM Education
Arizona’s students must have access to an education that strengthens our state’s ability to compete in the global economy. Education is key to creating good jobs here in Arizona. That’s why Congressman Barber is a member of the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Caucus. Strengthening STEM education at all levels: K-12, higher education, and in the workforce will provide our country with scientists, engineers, and capable technical workers who can thrive in the increasingly high technology industries that are critical to the economic growth of our country.
Student Loans
More than 7 million students, including more than 450,000 in Arizona, rely on the federal student loan program to help pay for college. Federal student loans are an important tool for ensuring that educational opportunities remain open to as many Americans as possible. Congressman Barber is committed to keeping this program strong for generations to come.
On July 1, 2013, the interest rate for Stafford student loans expired and rates automatically doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. On July 31, 2013, Congressman Barber voted for a bipartisan compromise bill to that brought down loan rates and created certainty for students as they enter this school year. This legislation was signed into law on August 9, 2013. Congressman Barber believes we still need a long term solution that will protect students from high interest rates and ensure that rates remain stable.
