This weekend, our nation lost five brave service members in Afghanistan. And shortly after they were killed, their families were notified that our government would not pay their survivor benefits due to the government shutdown. This is disgraceful and an outrage.
Last night, Congress failed to reach a common-sense solution to keep our government running. Beginning today, thousands of federal employees in Southern Arizona and across the country will face furloughs and certain government functions will be reduced because Congress failed to do its most basic function - to fund our government.
