Sen. Toomey's Statement Following Agreement to Extend Negotiations Regarding Iranian Nuclear Weapons Program
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) released the following statement regarding the Obama Administration's decision to agree to extend negotiations with Iran regarding its nuclear weapons program:
"Today's extension agreement with Iran is very troubling. Iran's aspiration to become a nuclear power represents a significant and immediate threat to our allies in the Middle East, especially Israel, and ultimately us.
"The stall tactics Iran uses to avoid complying with U.N resolutions requiring the suspension of uranium enrichment activities confirm that the Senate needs to pass the bipartisan Menendez-Kirk sanctions bill which imposes additional punitive measures on Iran unless it abandons its nuclear ambitions.
"Although the Senate has yet to consider the Menendez-Kirk sanctions bill, it is essential that the Senate take action soon. Additionally, the Administration should be steadfast in its demand that Iran abandons its nuclear program. Any final agreement the Administration reaches with Iran should be subject to Congressional approval."
