The Wayne Townsend Legislative Program

About Wayne Townsend

W. Wayne Townsend is a Hartford City, Indiana farmer who was the Democratic gubernatorial nominee in 1984. Townsend served in both the Indiana House of Representatives and the Indiana State Senate for a total of 23 years. He is a graduate of the Purdue School of Agriculture and later served on the school’s Board of Trustees. He is a past president of the Grant County Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association, and a past director of the Purdue Agricultural Alumni Association. In 2007, he received the Frank O'Bannon Public Service Award.

This program is designed to provide an individual interested in public service the opportunity to serve in Senator Joe Donnelly’s Washington, D.C. office. We are seeking a highly motivated, outstanding undergraduate or recent graduate with an interest in public service. The individual selected for the program will receive a stipend and must be able to work in Washington, D.C. Learn more about Wayne Townsend here.

Candidates for this program must meet the following qualifications:

• At least a rising junior in a 4-year accredited Indiana college or university, or a recent recipient of an undergraduate degree, and/or attending graduate school.
• Minimum 3.3 grade point average
• One-page essay explaining the applicant’s goals in public service (See application)
• Current resume
• Two (2) letters of recommendation from a professor, counselor or employer

Program Information
The selected candidate will be asked to commit to up to 40 hours a week. The program will run concurrently with regularly scheduled school semesters (September-December, January-May).

The selected individual will receive a monthly stipend but will be responsible for their travel to and from Washington, D.C., as well as securing lodging in Washington, D.C.

If selected, you will have the unique opportunity to work primarily with the legislative staff in the office of Senator Joe Donnelly. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: preparing background research, drafting constituent response letters, attending Congressional hearings and performing other office administrative duties. Selected candidates must demonstrate professionalism and discretion while working in the Senator’s office.

The Frank J. Anderson Military Legislative Program

About Frank J. Anderson

Frank J. Anderson, from Indianapolis, Indiana, joined the United States Navy in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1959. Following his military service, Anderson attended college, became a Marion County Sheriff Deputy, and ultimately served as a United States Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana and Marion County Sheriff. Sheriff Anderson dedicated over 50 years to public service.

This program is designed to provide a highly motivated, outstanding individual who has an interest in military and defense issues, along with an interest in a career in public service, the opportunity to serve in Senator Joe Donnelly’s Washington, D.C. office.
