Walsh meets with Fort Peck Chairman A.T. Stafne

Senator, Chairman discuss ways to improve quality of life in Indian Country

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

(U.S. SENATE) – Senator John Walsh welcomed Fort Peck Tribal Chairman A.T. Stafne to his Washington office to discuss rural water projects on the Fort Peck reservation.

Walsh and Stafne talked about the need to pass the Authorized Rural Water Projects Completion Act, legislation sponsored by Senator Walsh that would fund water projects that have been approved, but not yet completed.

“I am proud to partner with Montana’s tribal nations to increase economic development in Indian Country,” Walsh said.  “Chairman Stafne and I both agree that securing access to water for the Fort Peck Reservation is essential to maintaining public health while improving vital infrastructure for increased economic opportunity.”

Since taking office in February, Walsh has championed issues important to Montana’s Native Americans. He has cosponsored several pieces of legislation that remove barriers for tribes to responsibly develop their natural resources, increase access to voting and registration in Indian Country,  and preserve Native languages for generations to come.

Senator Jon Tester is also a cosponsor of the Authorized Rural Water Projects Completion Act.
