Walsh wraps up statewide small distillery tour Senator pledges to work to cut regulations for small distilleries Thursday, October 23, 2014
(BUTTE, Mont.) – Senator John Walsh today finished a tour that took him to small distilleries across the state. This fall, Walsh visited every small distillery in Montana to learn more about these unique businesses creating jobs across the state by touring the distilling facilities and hearing the concerns of owners. “Made in Montana products can’t be beat – and that’s especially true of our distilleries,” Walsh said. “Our distilleries are driving one of our fastest-growing industries. I will continue to do everything I can to eliminate red tape and lower taxes for local distillers across our state so they can continue to succeed and create good jobs in our state.” Walsh is bringing a bottle from each stop back to Washington where he will host a reception for Senate colleagues to discuss issues facing small distilleries. In Washington, Walsh is a strong voice for Montana’s distilleries. This spring, he formed the Senate Small Distiller’s Caucus. In September, Walsh and Senator Jon Tester scored a big win for Montana brewers, distillers, and ranchers by pushing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to drop a harmful proposed regulation on spent grain. Walsh also sponsored the Distillery Excise Tax Reform Act of 2014, legislation that would cut the federal excise tax rate for distilled spirits producers on the first 100,000 proof gallons produced annually by 80%.
