Walsh statement on vote to prevent government shutdown

Thursday, September 18, 2014

(U.S. SENATE) – Senator John Walsh tonight released the following statement after voting to prevent a government shutdown:

“I’m disappointed politics again got in the way of governing, and Congress kicked the can down the road for another two months. Congress failed to fulfill a basic responsibility to fund the government adequately and missed the opportunity to provide much-needed certainty for our economy.

“This temporary solution is better than last year’s devastating government shutdown.  This funding package keeps our public lands open, continues support for critical disease research, and allows vital programs to keep operating for our veterans, seniors and working families.

“The package also includes important assistance to combat the growing threat of ISIS.  When Congress returns to work in November, I’m hopeful we will have meaningful conversations about America’s role in leading a coalition of countries to protect our national security.”

The Senate passed the Continuing Resolution to fund the government through December 11, 2013 by a vote of 78 to 22.
