Initial Reports: Sexual Assaults Down, Reporting of Crimes Up— McCaskill: ‘This is exactly the combination we’re looking for’

Senator reacts to news accounts that military will show incidents of sexual violence have dropped while rate of victims coming forward has gone up

WASHINGTON – Initial news accounts tonight indicate that a comprehensive report to be issued tomorrow by the U.S. military will show a drop in the number of sexual assaults combined with a rise in the number of victims willing to come forward to report such crimes. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, a former courtroom prosecutor of sex crimes and senior member of the Armed Services Committee released the following statement:

“Pending the report’s public release tomorrow, assuming news accounts are correct—reporting of assaults being up and incidents of assault being down are exactly the combination we’re looking for. I’m sure there’s more work to do, and I’m anxious to hear how victims feel about the services and support offered to them when they report an assault.”
