Leading advocates have called the bill “the most important federal legislation” on this issue in more than four decades, “a win/win for everyone in North Carolina” and “a proposal that will meet many interests of sportsmen and wildlife advocates in America and will help preserve our sporting heritage and the special places for our children.” At a time when Washington struggles to work across the aisle, our bill demonstrates that Democrats and Republicans can work together to find common ground. I look forward to working with Senator Murkowski to advance this package through the Senate and into law.
Fortunately, the Senate acted last week to address the concerns of about 138,000 North Carolinians and as many as four million homeowners and businesses in the United States when we passed the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act with overwhelming bipartisan support.
The state legislature irresponsibly passed a bill that slashed state benefits knowing full well that their bill violated federal law and would result in out-of-work North Carolinians losing these crucial federal benefits. I’m doing everything possible to right this wrong and remedy the damage this law has been doing since it went into effect in July.
Millions of school children in North Carolina and across the country suffer from severe allergies, and for these students, exposure to the wrong food at lunch or an insect bite at recess can cause serious illness and even become fatal. But as students across North Carolina returned to school this month, their parents’ minds can be a little more at ease knowing that Congress recently passed a bill that will help ensure the safety of their children at school.
I come from a family of lifelong hunters, and I’m committed to protecting and growing the time-honored traditions of sportsmen and women in our state. The SPORT Act combines the best ideas from Republicans and Democrats to enhance opportunities for hunting, fishing and shooting while strengthening our economy. I will continue to work with all stakeholders in North Carolina and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move this legislation forward.
As we pay tribute to Corporal Hammersley and all our heroes this Veterans Day, I'm pleased the Senate unanimously approved an increase in the cost-of-living adjustment for veterans with service-connected disabilities starting December 1st.
This government shutdown was completely unnecessary. Congress should have never gotten to the point where the government was shut down and on the verge of a default crisis, and neither Republicans nor Democrats should attempt to take a victory lap after last night's vote.
During a federal government shutdown, Congressional offices are required by law to operate only at a level that permits federal representatives to perform basic legislative duties. I hope this newsletter will be helpful in understanding how my office will function during this government shutdown.
I encourage any interested young students to attend Military Academy Day on September 21st so my office can educate them about the admissions process, help them begin their service to our country and make North Carolinians proud.
Compromises are too few and far between in Washington these days, and I am proud to support this bipartisan bill that will bring immediate relief to millions of students.
Our students can’t afford this interest rate hike, and our economy can’t either. If we saddle our young people with unsustainable debt, it will be more difficult for them to buy homes or cars, start businesses, support families, or invent, innovate and otherwise contribute to growing our economy.
The federal government must stop treating the Lumbee as a second-class tribe and as second-class Americans. Recognition of the Lumbee is long overdue. I will keep working with my colleagues to pass this legislation so that the Lumbee gain the full recognition they deserve.
As we gather with friends and family this July Fourth for backyard barbecues and fireworks, we should take a moment to honor not only the values of freedom and liberty that make our country great, but also those who have fought to protect them.
Agriculture is the largest industry in our state, employing hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians, and my first priority during debate on the 2013 Farm Bill was making sure it worked for North Carolina's farmers.
This week is Small Business Week, and I’m proud to support the 800,000 small businesses that represent more than 98 percent of our state’s private sector employers and nearly half of all jobs in North Carolina.
I will not stand for sexual assault in our military. Service members risk their lives around the world as they engage our enemies on the battlefield; they should not have to worry about their personal safety on our bases at home and around the world.
During the month of May, I join my fellow North Carolinians in recognizing Military Appreciation Month. North Carolina is the most military-friendly state in the nation, and I’m proud that we treat every month as military appreciation month.
The Winston-Salem regional office serves most veterans in our state. Yet more than 7,000 veterans have been waiting at least a year for that office to rule on their disability claims. Even worse is that more than 700 veterans have been waiting as long two years.
The need to reinstate the Tuition Assistance program is clear. This program gives our best and brightest the opportunity to continue developing their skills while on duty, which will ultimately lead to smoother transitions into the civilian workforce. At a time of still too-high unemployment this could not be more important.
Last weekend I had the incredible privilege to attend and serve as a co-leader of the Faith and Politics Institute’s 13th Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage in Alabama. I was part of a bipartisan delegation of Members of Congress, religious leaders and civil rights leaders including Congressman John Lewis, an original Freedom Rider.
