Energy and the Environment

Taking action to address climate change

Sen. Booker is committed to bringing environmental issues to the forefront of the nation’s policy agenda. His seat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and his appointment as chairman of the Oversight Sub-Committee give him unique platforms to address New Jersey’s environmental concerns.

The effects of climate change threaten the public safety and economic vitality of New Jersey and the nation. By conservative estimates, New Jersey can expect to see a foot and a half of sea level rise by 2050 if no action is taken.

Sen. Booker views rising sea levels and the increasing frequency of storm surges as a grave threat to New Jersey’s coastal communities. He will work tirelessly to ensure that climate change is addressed, and to encourage investment in the jobs of the future: solar, wind, and other renewable energy.

Cleaning up New Jersey communities

Sadly, New Jersey is host to more than 100 Superfund sites and thousands of additional brownfields: properties that are saturated with hazardous substances from polluters. These sites endanger the health of our children, and thwart economic development in New Jersey communities. Sen. Booker chaired his first Oversight hearing on the Federal Superfund program, and introduced legislation to ensure that polluters pay for clean-up of these sites.

Sen. Booker is also a lead sponsor of the BUILD Act, which would bring new authority and resources to help clean up Brownfield properties and make communities more attractive to economic development.
