Action on Education

During the 112th Congress, I have authored and agreed to co-sponsor the following selected measures which deal with our country's educational system and policies. This is not a comprehensive list of all the legislation I have co-sponsored related to education. You can view a comprehensive list at the Legislation Co-Sponsored Section of this site, or through congress.gov.

Legislation I have sponsored in the 112th Congress includes:

  • S.595 - Impact Aid Timely Repayment Act of 2011. 85% of school districts eligible for Impact Aid receive funding for Impact Aid receive this funding over 3 years after it is appropriated. The Impact Aid Timely Repayment Act of 2011 seeks to rectify this issue by requiring the Department of Education to allocate Impact Aid funding to districts within three years following the initial appropriation versus the 6 year window.

Other actions I have taken to support Idaho education include:

  • Senate Rural Education Caucus - The goal of the SREC is to help members of Congress more effectively address the educational needs of rural students, schools, and communities.

  • Signed a letter to appropriators in support of strong and continued funding for the Impact Aid Program, which is a program created in 1950 to provide support for school districts burdened by the presence of nontaxable federal land and installati0ons to make up for the lost revenues and additional costs associated with federal presence, including Native American and military children.
  • Signed a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius in support of continuation of the Healthy Communities Program in FY11.
