Veterans

Our nation owes a tremendous debt to our servicemembers, to military families, and to our veterans who sacrificed to protect our freedoms. Hawaii’s veterans have a long history and tradition of dedicated service and sacrifice for our country. That's why supporting our servicemembers and their families, whether during deployment, during the transition back home, or as they settle into civilian life as veterans, is an obligation I take seriously as a member of both the Senate Committees on Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs.

In Hawaii, there is a large population of Filipino World War II veterans who honorably answered the call of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and served alongside our armed forces during World War II. They deserve our country’s admiration and respect, as well as the benefits that their service to this nation entitles them to. That’s why I am fighting to immigration backlogs their children face. Many of these veterans – now in their eighties and nineties -- have waited decades to be reunited with their families. They should have that right. In the immigration reform bill passed in the Senate, I convinced my colleagues to include a measure that would end the backlog and reunify these brave veterans with their children.

All veterans deserve the best care, and on the Veterans Affairs Committee, I am working to improve care, benefits and services our veterans receive. I stand ready to help should veterans or their family members need any help with a specific case pending before the VA or any other federal agency.
