Energy Independence

Energy Independence

“It is clearer than ever that we need a new “do-it-all” energy policy that expands America’s energy portfolio." - Kirsten Gillibrand, U.S. Senator

Senator Gillibrand believes that our nation must decrease its dependence on foreign oil by ensuring that domestic production is used here in America and that we continue to develop new sustainable technologies that will power our economy for years to come.

New York is home to the proudest manufacturing tradition, world-class universities and research institutions, the hardest workers and the brightest minds — every resource needed to fuel our economy with new energy, new businesses and new jobs, and lead us to energy independence.

Now is the time to harness the potential in New York to produce clean energy that’s made in America.

Representing New York's Strong Environmental Tradition

Senator Gillibrand follows in the footsteps of great New York Senators Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Hillary Rodham Clinton by serving on the important Senate Environment & Public Works Committee - giving New York a seat at the table on critical issues from protecting clean air and water to reversing the effects of climate change.

From generating electricity in Niagara Falls over a century ago to upstate farmers who are growing non-food-based feedstocks for biofuel development today, New York State has a long, rich history of environmental conservation and development of alternative sources of energy. To support investments in renewable energy and help create jobs, Senator Gillibrand is also focused on extending key tax incentives, such as the production tax credit for wind energy, which supports the deployment of new wind power projects, and the Section 1603 grant program, which provides grants to support the deployment of new alternative energy products, such as solar, biomass and geothermal.

Senator Gillibrand is also focused on strengthening the environmental standards that protect the air we breathe and the water we drink. She has fought hard against efforts to undermine standards that require polluters in other states to limit toxic emissions.

Senator Gillibrand will continue to promote that rich heritage, developing new energy systems and technologies that will create jobs in our state and address the many environmental concerns, from reversing global warming to remediation of old industrial sites.
