Get covered: Health insurance exchanges offer affordable care

Affordable Care ActThe Affordable Care Act will help make sure every American has access to affordable, quality health care. The law makes it possible for Michiganians who do not currently have health insurance to obtain comprehensive, affordable coverage either through expanded access to the Medicaid program or through a private insurer. While some of the provisions of the law have already gone into effect, such as allowing young adults the option to stay on their parents health insurance until age 26, other aspects of the law have yet to be fully implemented.

I would encourage you to learn about the new health reform law and how it can help you and your family by clicking on the links below to the White House website, HealthCare.gov, which is operated by the Department of Health and Human Services, and other resources.

Need health care? Purchase affordable health coverage through Michigan's new health insurance markeplace. Visit Healthcare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596 to sign up. Hearing impaired callers can dial 1-855-889-4325 TTY/TDD for assistance.

From Healthcare.gov, here are the most important dates for 2015 coverage:

  • December 15, 2014: The last date to enroll for coverage that starts on January 1, 2015.
  • December 31, 2014: Date when all 2014 Marketplace coverage ends, no matter when you enrolled.
  • January 1, 2015: The date 2015 coverage can start if you apply by December 15, 2014, or if you accept automatic enrollment in your 2014 plan or a similar plan.
  • February 15, 2015: The last day to enroll in 2015 coverage. If you miss the deadline, you can't sign up for a health plan inside or outside the Marketplace for the rest of 2015. The only exception is if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
