LGBT Community Leaders

Washington, D.C. – Today, Senate Democrats met with leaders in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community to discuss shared legislative priorities essential to ensuring equal protection under the law.  Senate Democrats reaffirmed their commitment to the LGBT community and vowed to work together to create the same opportunities for all Americans.  Senate Democrats, and the vast majority of Americans, believe that no person, regardless of who they are or who they love, should ever face discrimination, harassment, or access to jobs.

“This was a great opportunity to have a dialogue with leaders who are working in communities across America to advance our shared values of fairness, freedom and equal opportunity for all,” said Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). “America has made great progress but there is more work to be done together to fulfill the promise of passing on to the next generation a country that is more equal, not less equal.”

While Senate Democrats have fought to ensure that all Americans receive equal rights and opportunities, there is still more work to be done, including eliminating employment discrimination, reviewing provisions in Social Security and Veterans’ benefits that are preventing same-sex couples from receiving the same benefits as straight couples, preventing bullying, and protecting the basic human rights of LGBT people around the world.   Senate Democrats will continue to work on legislation that gives all Americans a fair shot.
