WASHINGTON – Led by Chairman Mark Begich (AK), the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee hosted a discussion on the economic impacts of climate change today in the Capitol. The meeting featured a dozen leaders gathered from across the country that represented the private sector, government, and communities who shared their respective challenges they confront due to climate change with more than a dozen Senate Democrats.

At the roundtable event, participants highlighted the economic impacts facing their local industries and communities. Issues discussed during today’s meeting included the devastation of crops that farmers confront following seasons of extreme weather, the erosion of coast lines, and the destruction of aging infrastructure.

“Alaska is ground zero when it comes to climate change and we understand firsthand the dramatic impacts it can have on our communities and the economy,” said Sen. Begich. “I was pleased to chair today’s meeting and have a productive conversation about how we can come together to make sure our communities and industries are prepared to adapt to these changes. I especially want to thank Mike Williams, Chief of the Yupiit Nation, for making the long journey from Akiak to join us and bring another Alaska perspective about the economic impacts of climate change to the table.”

Roger Johnson, President of the National Farmers Union added, “We appreciate the Senate Democrats convening this meeting of climate change stakeholders and look forward to participating in similar meetings in the future to ensure that U.S. family farmers and ranchers are a part of the solution to improve our environment for future generations.”
