Senate Democrats Host African American Media Roundtable

Media Roundtable

Discussion focused on Democrats’ efforts to improve the lives of African American families

Washington, D.C. – Today, Senator Mark Begich (AK), Chairman of the Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, and Senator Mo Cowan (MA) were joined by representatives of African American publications, new media outlets, and nearly a dozen other Senate Democrats for a roundtable conversation held in the U.S. Capitol. During the discussion, Senate Democrats stressed their commitment to job creation, providing an affordable education, protecting voting rights and the urgent need to address the economic disparity in the African American community.

As the 113th Congress continues to unfold, Senate Democrats continue their commitment to work with the African-American community to advance a common-sense agenda. Today’s open dialogue with African American media outlets was an example of Senate Democrats efforts to reach the community through print, broadcast, and online mediums.

“I want to thank all of our participants from today’s African American media roundtable,” said Senator Begich. “Today’s conversation was a great opportunity to engage in a meaningful discussion about issues that are of critical importance to the African American community. I look forward to continuing today’s insightful dialogue and exchange of ideas moving forward not only with today’s guests but with their audiences as well.”

“In order to better address the issues that are most important to the African American community, we need to hear directly from, and have an open dialogue with, communities of color.  Candid discussions like this are a great way for our caucus to engage with the media about issues affecting all Americans like jobs and the economy, and I hope this dialogue continues long into the future,” said Senator Cowan.
