Veterans

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito is committed to providing West Virginia’s veterans with the benefits they have earned through their dedicated service to their country.

When men and women join the military, our nation makes a commitment to them to provide the care and benefits they earn through their service. As a member of Congress, Shelley fights to ensure that the Veterans Affairs Department honors the promises made to our veterans. Our veterans need and deserve timely and quality care, and Shelley has pushed the VA to reduce its claims backlog. Veterans should not have to wait for years for the VA to decide whether it will help.

Shelley is also deeply concerned about the mental health needs of our veterans and ensuring that the VA is responsive to the needs of today’s veterans. Ensuring that veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury receive care is a priority, and Shelley has worked to ensure that the VA is reaching out to affected veterans and setting up local, specialized care for their injuries.

Shelley voted for the Hire More Heroes Act in 2014 that would exempt veterans who receive health benefits through TRICARE or the VA from counting toward a business’s obligation under the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate. This legislation, which is currently waiting to be considered in the Senate, would make it easier for small businesses to hire veterans. Shelley also voted for the Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2008 and the Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act – both of which have been signed into law – to help provide new educational opportunities for the men and women who have served our country.

As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Shelley has also worked to ensure that the American dream of homeownership is accessible to veterans. She worked to enhance federal support for the VA’s home loan guarantee program, providing additional assistance to veterans seeking to purchase new homes.
