Lawmakers seek review of funding gaps and barriers impacting Holocaust survivors

WASHINGTON. DC - U.S. Sens. Bill Nelson D-FL, Ben Cardin (D-MD), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) sent a letter today to the administration’s new special envoy to the Holocaust survivor community requesting a comprehensive review of funding shortfalls and barriers that prevent U.S. Holocaust survivors from receiving vital services.   The lawmakers’ letter follows a hearing the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging held in January to examine the health and social service needs of aging Holocaust survivors.  One-fourth of the estimated 109,000 to 140,000 Holocaust survivors in the U.S. live at or below the poverty line with many still facing significant health and mental illness problems as a result of Nazi atrocities.  To read the letter, click here.
