Mar 23, 2014I recently joined a dozen unemployed North Carolinians at Wake Technical Community College to discuss the state of our economic recovery. One of the participants told me that after he was laid off and his unemployment benefits ran out, he lost his house and his car. He now has to count each slice of bread to make his loaf last until he can afford to buy another. Sadly, in the great state of North Carolina, in the most prosperous nation on earth, his story is not an isolated one.

Keeping Our Promise to Veterans
7/10/14Our nation makes a promise to those who have served our country in uniform. Just as the military leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind at home. Veterans must be able to access the benefits they've earned when they need them. That's why I have been so troubled by findings of long wait times at some VA facilities, including hospitals in the Fourth Congressional District, and deceptive reporting practices.

REMINDER: March 31 Health Insurance Enrollment Deadline
3/25/14The deadline to enroll in health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act's Healthcare.gov Health Insurance Marketplace is March 31.More than 100,000 North Carolinians have already signed up for coverage using the Marketplace. Many of our people have used the law's tax credits and protections barring discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions to access affordable coverage for the first time.

1/31/14Dear Friend, In speaking about our flag to school assemblies, I often note the unusual fact that part of our flag, the field of stars, has changed over time. I then draw an analogy: our democracy continues to develop and become more inclusive as well. The most tangible example of this is the expansion of voting rights: from the removal of property qualifications to women's suffrage, the civil rights movement, and passage of the Voting Rights Act.
