WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) was recognized this weekend by the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) for his longstanding commitment to the National Guard.  Inhofe was awarded the “Charles Dick Medal of Merit” at the National Guard of Oklahoma’s annual business meeting on Saturday.

“I am honored to be recognized by the National Guard Association of the United States with the Charles Dick Medal of Merit,” Inhofe said.  “NGAUS provides invaluable support to the National Guardsmen who serve our nation so diligently.”

Inhofe, who recently visited members of Oklahoma’s 45th Infantry Brigade at Camp Cropper and Camp Bucca in Iraq, also took the opportunity to praise the Oklahoma National Guard. “Oklahoma currently stands as one of the greatest contributors of mobilized Guardsmen in the War on Terrorism. Whether serving our state at home or our nation abroad, Oklahomans can take pride in the quality and dedication of our citizen-soldiers.”

The Charles Dick Medal of Merit was established in 1988 to recognize the contributions to the National Guard by legislators at the state and national levels.  The award is named in honor of Major General Charles Dick, President of the National Guard Association of the United States from 1902 to 1909 and a member of the Ohio National Guard.  As a Congressman and later a Senator, Maj. Gen. Dick was responsible for the passage of legislation which established the foundation of the modern National Guard.
