Inhofe Statement on Broken Arrow Casino Proposal
January 9, 2012
U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today made the following statement on the recent tribal casino proposal in Broken Arrow:
“There are two means by which leases of land belonging to the Five Civilized Tribes can be approved. The first is through a state district court’s ruling. The second is through an application and administrative process with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). In the case of this land, the district court’s ruling deferred the parties to the BIA application process. Having closely followed this issue since March of last year, my office has been assured by the BIA that no such lease application has been made. This renders the current lease on the land invalid. Given the strong local opposition to a casino at this location and the land’s proximity to schools and homes, I do not believe that the BIA would approve such an application even if it were made. I strongly agree with the local concerns about a casino at this location, and will continue to do all I can to address this issue with the federal agencies.”
