Second Amendment

“Our Founding Fathers considered this right important enough to make it a prominent part of our Constitution.  I will continue to push for legislation that will protect the Second Amendment rights of all of our citizens and oppose any attempts to infringe on those rights.”

The Second Amendment to the Constitution reads: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  Our Founding Fathers considered this right important enough to make it a prominent part of our Constitution, and regarded the right to keep and bear arms a personal, fundamental right.

When our rights were challenged by the Supreme Court in the D.C. v. Heller case, I joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to argue in an amicus brief that the Washington, D.C. gun ban was unconstitutional.  The Supreme Court sided with our stance and determined that the right to bear arms is an individual right.  This ruling represented a considerable victory for our freedom, although much work is still required to ensure that our rights are protected.  Most recently, I signed a similar amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn the Chicago gun ban challenged in McDonald v. Chicago.

I have never supported efforts to remove firearms from the hands of law-abiding citizens and believe attempts to do so only aids those who violate our laws and prey on society.  I will continue to push for legislation that will protect the Second Amendment rights of all of our citizens and oppose any attempts to infringe on those rights.
