My Committees
I serve on the Armed Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
I am the Vice Chairman of the Armed Services Committee where I also lead the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats. I continue to serve on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. I was also been asked by the Speaker of the House to lead an initiative on cybersecurity, which focusd Congress’s efforts to combat the growing national security and economic threat.
House Committee on Armed Services
The Armed Services Committee is responsible for the funding and oversight of the Department of Defense, our Armed Forces, and portions of the Department of Energy relating to nuclear weapons. It plays a crucial role in the federal government’s first responsibility - providing for the common defense.
In order to do live up that responsibility, we work to ensure that the U.S. military is properly postured to meet the complex security demands of the 21st Century. This involves holding oversight hearings with the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the individual service secretaries and chiefs of staff, combatant commanders, and many other important leaders in the national defense field.
We also continue to aggressively seek out the views and perspectives of military service members and their families to include Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve members across the United States and at deployed locations overseas.
Subcommittee on Emerging Threats
I am the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, which is responsible for overseeing counter-terrorism programs and initiatives and counter proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Additionally, this subcommittee oversees U.S. Special Operations Forces, cybersecurity programs, force protection policy and oversight, and related intelligence support. It makes sure that our nation is protected against terrorist attacks and unconventional threats.
The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) was established in 1977 to provide oversight of the United States Intelligence Community.
Our Intelligence Community is a federation of executive branch agencies and organizations that work separately and together to conduct intelligence activities necessary for the conduct of foreign relations and the protection of the national security of the United States. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is probably the most widely recognized agency subject to HPSCI oversight. However, the committee maintains both authorization authority and budgetary control over all classified government programs.
The Committee provides policy guidance and sets classified funding levels for the sixteen agencies of the Intelligence Community funded by the National Intelligence Program and the Military Intelligence Program. It also conducts the vast majority of its work in closed session due to the sensitive nature of its work.
The Intelligence Committee ensures the intelligence community has the resources it needs to carry out their important mission. It oversees the collection and analysis of intelligence information from all around the world to ensure our national security and prevent potential crisis situations, especially terrorist activity.
Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical Intelligence
I am on the Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical (T & T) Intelligence. T & T oversees the technical aspects of intelligence gathering, including space-based assets, as well as cyber security. T & T also has primary oversight over the National Security Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, the National Geospatial Agency and other military intelligence programs.
