Every spring, the United States House of Representatives sponsors the Congressional Art Competition for high school students across our nation. The annual competition provides an opportunity for students across the country to exhibit their artwork and receive national recognition. The competition also symbolizes the important role that the arts play in American society.

The first place winning entry from each congressional district is displayed in the corridor tunnel leading to the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, where it is seen by thousands of people.

All submitted entries must be original in concept, design and execution. The high school students’ pieces are assessed by a panel of expert art judges who pick the winning artwork for the 7th Congressional District. Congressman McDermott holds an annual ceremony to congratulate the winner.

Below is the 2012 winning art piece from the 7th Congressional District. The piece, titled "Ellen," was done by Judy Zhou from Garfield High School. Details for the next annual competition will be posted here in early 2013.
